Edward Slow (1841-1925) – The Wiltshire Moonraker

Edward Slow is best remembered for his rendering in rhyme
of the old Wessex smuggling legend, “The Wiltshire Moonrakers.” It tells how two village smugglers outwitted the Devizes
Excises-man, when their donkey bolted and tipped the barrels
into the pond, by telling the official they were ‘reakun var a cheese.’
He believed them!

Between 1864 and 1917 Edward Slow wrote many rhymes
and tales about the events, lives and characters of his part of
Wiltshire, capturing his time and place in the fast-disappearing
Wiltshire dialect and with a true labouring-class humour.
